The Buckeye State is often misunderstood by people not from the state. Most people don't know the origin of the name. The Buckeye State is named for the prevalence of the Buckeye Tree in the state. The Ohio buckeye tree (Aesculus Glabra) is a deciduous tree prominent in the area. As settlers came to the area the nickname grew, despite the odd smell associated with the tree.
Not only is the nickname used by sports teams and being the state's official tree, there is a candy made called the buckeye. Simply a spoonful of peanut butter fudge dipped in various chocolate forms, it is popular during sporting events. The key element is the shape of an opening in the chocolate cover showing the peanut butter underneath.
